Attention on Deck! Major Changes Coming for Dental and Vision Benefits for Retired Military Veterans!

by Marc Manor

Our eyes and mouth are the windows into our overall health. So, this week I want to focus on my retired military brothers and sisters to alert them to the upcoming changes to their dental and vision benefits – Yes I said dental AND vision benefits!

The Tricare Retired Dental Plan (TDRP) benefits that have been offered to retired veterans is coming to an end on December 31, 2019. Information on these changes have been publicized by Tricare by way of a note on the TDRP web page:
and via the US Mail. Benefits are shifting to the Federal Employee system and the changes are more prominently posted on the BENEFEDS website at:

Despite these publicized notices and mailings, many retired veterans are still not aware of these changes!

The Bad News
There are certain actions retired veterans must take to enroll in the Federal Dental and Vision Program (FEDVIP). If Retired Veterans fail to take the necessary steps to enroll during the Federal Benefits Open Enrollment (November 12 – December 10, 2018) they may lose their dental coverage starting in 2019!

The Good News
There is a lot more good news than bad news! For one, there are many more choices. There are six dental plan carriers that are available to retired veterans to choose from under the BENEFEDS system and four others are available depending on region. Most of these plans offer two levels of benefits: A high option plan designed for those who may require more intermediate or major coverage and a standard plan for those who primarily use their dental insurance for routine maintenance. The cost of these plans is comparable to the TDRP plans and some have more extensive coverage!

More Good News!
Vision benefits are also available through the BENEFEDS system for retired veterans! This is a new benefit for retired veterans. There are four vision plan carriers nationally and all four offer two levels of coverage for vision.

Even More Good News!
The vision plans will also be available to active duty family members. This is a huge benefit that previously did not exist!

We need your help to spread the word to make sure our retired veterans and active-duty family members don't miss out on the open enrollment period (11/12/18-12/10/18). We are thankful to have the support of many of our veteran’s organizations in the community help us get the word out but we want to continue to up our game with our grass roots effort to get the information out to every nook and cranny of the community. No one left behind...that's how we roll!
